SABA

"European sample bank and data base"

RESPONSIBLE OF TASK: L.Maertens (CLO)  and T. Gidenne (INRA)

This fourth task "SABA" was identified at the first meeting of the ERAFE project held in Lisbon in 1997. The constitution of a common sample bank (feeds and feedstuffs) and of a corresponding database (containing data on chemical composition and nutritive value) was considered essential for the correct advancement of the program.

In fact, SABA is a fundamental tool to enable future studies aiming to compare procedures for feed evaluation.

Most of the EGRAN partners do not store for a long term samples of the essayed feeds and/or feedstuffs while in view of predicting the nutritive value of feeds and feedstuffs, a sufficiently large and reliable dataset is necessary.

Earlier efforts with other species (pigs, poultry) and rabbits have clearly shown the limits of a data bank without a sample bank. Therefore, the chemical data obtained by procedures harmonised within EGRAN and nutritional data obtained in vivo according to PEREZ et al. (1995) of each sample stored in the SABA will be collected and used for the harmonisation of methods to predict nutritive value of feeds and feedstuffs.

The sample bank is presently under the responsibility of INRA, while the database is under the responsibility of CLO.

PARTICIPANTS: INRA, CLO, ISAL, UPADU, UPM and UPV.

GENERAL AGREEMENT

ACTIVITIES: At the present (July 2000), 135 sample of feeds, 39 samples of feedstuffs, 56 samples of faeces are stored in the SABA. Collection, preparation and storing conditions are similar for all samples. Part of these samples are alredy used in common activities (NIRS and SIMUL).
